Dear friends,

It is with deep sadness that I need to inform you of my decision to resign as the volunteer coordinator of the Main Street Market for the City of York, effective immediately.

The fact that I will no longer be involved does not affect the existence of the market, it merely means that I no longer will be the contact person or "go to" person. Please contact the City Manager, Charles Helms with any questions, concerns, or market matters.

It has truly been a pleasure working with all of you, getting to know you, and support you these past 4 years. It has however, been a growing challenge and a very unpleasant one this past year in working with the City to get them to see the potential their own market has and what an impact it could have on the community, if they would only invest the time and money in it that it needs and that it and you deserve. It simply is a battle I no longer care to fight. The enjoyment is gone.

I wish you all well and ask you to continue to participate with a market and be involved in this wonderful community. You will see me at the market occasionally, as I have every intention of continuing to support you. I still need tomatoes, eggs, honey, and all the other wonderful items you so lovingly and faithfully share.

A new season , a new name, and new ideas!

I can't begin to tell you how many times since we opened the Market that I've heard it referred to as "the Market on Main St" and to be honest there often wasn't enough spaces on a form to write York Downtown Farmers Market, so after some thought and discussion it was a pretty easy decision to change the Market name to one that not only made sense but was easily recognizable...The MAIN STREET MARKET! And already I'm so glad we did.

As I look at the calendar and feel the temps outside getting warmer and the grass getting greener, I realize that we're only 2 months away from Opening Day of our 4th season. This is always an exciting and fun time of year. And especially this year we'll have some visible changes and improvements to share and offer. The canopy on the Market lot has been given a face lift just yesterday and a new sign has been ordered. Fall 2011 will bring some construction work on the lot which will mark the beginning phase of creating the Market Park directly behind the lot, which will be a project in conjunction with the Downtown Business Association.

So stay tuned for more info and get those gardens planned and planted and your art work ready to share, and join us on May 14th for Opening Day!

CHRISTMAS TREES ARRRIVING WED, NOV 24TH!!!

The Southern favorite, the Fraser Fir will be arriving Wed, Nov 24th at the Market along with fresh roping, mixed green wreaths (with berries), bows, handmade tree stands, and VENDORS. Prices will range from $30 and up and al trees were cut this past week in the NC mountains. Bring the family, pick up your tree and enjoy downtown York during the holidays!

We welcome you to join us on Saturday mornings at the Market continuing through the holidays! Normal hours are 8AM-Noon, but some vendors are preferring to wait a little later in the mornings now until is warms up a bit, & then are staying a little later in the afternoon too. Space is FREE, & vendors must provide their necessary tables, chairs, canopy or umbrella, etc. All items sold at the Market must be handmade or homegrown. The Market season has been extended through December. Though much of the seasonal produce is coming to an end, many of the local crafters are still setting up on Saturdays and we're still attracting new vendors as well. Come stop by on Sat mornings from 8am-noon and see all the great gift ideas they have to offer.

We love having Fido and Fifi visit us at the Market on Saturday mornings when you come to shop, and to make sure that they are well and happy we have teamed with Shear Pawfection and Palmetto Vet (Dr James Love), to do just that. Palmetto Vet will be offering Rabies Distemper, and Micro Chipping at a reduced rate and Shear Pawfection will be offering nail trims for $5.00.
In keeping with the city ordinance, all dogs must be leashed.

The Market is open from 8AM-Noon.

It's back to normal this Saturday...8AM - Noonish. We have had good holiday-weekend Saturdays so far this year so we look forward to our regular vendors and visitors returning. We even recruited a few new ones at Summerfest!

There's still fresh, local produce and mountain produce available, and I hear sweet potatoes, beets and sweet mountain cabbage will be arriving soon. We look forward to the first mums and pumpkins of the season! Cross your fingers, we may even get apples...

Be sure to stop in and see us at Summerfest! We have 21 vendors registered and we will be there for the entire day (with the exception of the produce vendors that sell out). We're geared up for the crowd and will offer fresh, seasonal, local and mountain produce, local honey, herbs, soy candles, goats milk soap, fresh cut perennials, pottery, leather crafts, wood crafts, doll clothes, silk floral arrangements, jewelry, and SOOOOO much more! FREE SCDA consumer info and recipe brochures, children's coloring books, and market info for 2011 will be available. Be sure to stop by the market booth and register to WIN the "basket full of local goodies" provided by our vendors! We will also be selling Summerfest t shirts while supplies last.

NFMW/Vendor Appreciation Day 2010

A day of fun, food, and friends! There really is no way to say "Thank You" to all of the vendors and the communty for supporting the market and helping it grow. We're in the middle of our 3rd season and what a joy it is every Sat morning to see the friendly faces of our loyal vendors and visitors! Our cookout yesterday has become a tradition and something we all look forward to. Jim and his gang do an awesome job at the grill and organizing the whole thing. The involvement and support from our 4H'ers is something we have truly grown to appreciate, and we cannot encourage the community enough to support them. And as for our local musicians Tom Aggeles and Rob Quincy (aka Rock Fabulous and The Outlaw Poets), you certainly created the atmosphere and were enjoyed by all. Heard some great comments from vendors and visitors, so we hope to have you back soon. We have 2 months of market days left, though I have a feeling the time is going to fly, so please continue to include the market in your morning routine or if you haven't stopped by yet...we'd love to say HI!

Nattional Farmers Market Week Celebration!

National Farmers Market Week is here! It runs August 1-7, 2010 and is a great opportunity to celebrate one of South Carolina’s leading industries (agriculture) and the people who make it possible: farmers, local, hobby growers and artisans! There’s something special about having a farmers’ market in your neighborhood. It provides a source for healthy produce, handmade art, and a place to get to know your local farmers and it's also a community gathering place that can bring neighbors, friends, family together for entertainment and fun.

The York Downtown Farmers Market is paying tribute to it's vendors and saying thank you to the community with a National Farmers Market week celebration Saturday, August 7. Activities and entertainment will include local musicians "Rock Fabulous & The Outlaw Poets" (Tom Aggeles & Rob Quincy) performing live from 10:00AM-NOON, tractor show (will be set up across the street from the market), 4H petting farm, watermelon seed spitting contest, coloring contest and come as your favorite fruit or vegetable or farm animal. All contests will start at 10:30AM.

The market is located on N Congress St and is open from 8AM-Noon, Saturdays. Market vendors offer fresh, seasonal, local and mountain produce, local honey, goats milk soap, soy candles, fresh cut perennials, wood, leather, and textile crafts, bird houses, herbs and much more. Vendor space is FREE and there are still several weeks left to get involved or come visit the market.

So, I'm curious...please share your ideas for a new market name, shorter of course than the current one, and let's see what we come up with. So far, I've heard 1). Olde York Market, 2). Stowe Dairy Farms Fans

For all the fans of our new vendor this season, this is just an update regarding their particapation at the market in the near future. We have all missed them in the past few weeks due to family obligations and I received a sad message this morning that Tim's dad passed away. They will naturally not be with us this Sat, July, 31 but our thoughts are with them and we do hope they return as soon as possible, and of course we hope they can join us on Aug 7 for the "Vendor Appreciation Cookout". RECORD SETTING DAY!!!

Not only are we setting attendance records at the market this past month (70-100+ weekly), but today we set a record with 18 vendors!!! Offering an aray of fresh, local and mountain grown produce, we also have crafters with something for everyone, in addition to fesh cut perennials and homemade lemonade. WOW !What a DAY!

If you were not at the market this past Saturday, you missed one of the best days in our 3 year history!!! It was wonderful and inspiring to see the lot FULL of vendors and so much traffic! Everyone walked away with something in hand. Shoppers were parking across the steet, down the block and visiting our downtown businesses after the market...YES, we do have a lot to offer. New vendors are joining us weekly and customers are returning weekly as well. So good to see the familiar faces! We have tomatoes of every size, color, and shape, huge blue berries, the sweetest sweet corn, beans, and I hear melons will be arriving SOON, just to name a few! Our craftsmen and artists offer an awsome selection of art, woodcrafts, textiles and florals. And don't forget pure goats milk soap and natural soy candles, grass fed beef and beautiful fresh cut flowers. We look forward to seeing you and please come get to know us!

Please stop by and say "Hi" and see what we have to offer, or maybe share what you have to offer with us. We're getting closer to the local produce being ready...just a couple more weeks. Last week we had radishes, asparagus, & fresh cut flowers. Hopefully, Mr Robinson will be returning with his starter plants this week if his health allows him (he truly is looking forward to coming back). A Delightful Opening Day!

Indeed, a delightful opening day at the market it was! Such a pleasure to get reacquainted with our loyal vendors and visitors, and to meet and greet all the new ones. In the weeks to come there will be more vendors returning for the 3rd season of the market, especially as the produce starts coming in from the gardens, and as usual there were the requests for the old favorites; fresh eggs, flowers, soy candles, herbs, and so much more. Big hits today were Dawn's goats milk soap, Colin's fresh baked bread from the Brandon House (hot out of the oven folks!), the beautiful hand woven necklaces from the ladies ministry at Trinity Church, and Miss Ruby's Herbs from Stacey's. We look forward to having these items becoming regulars at the market along with a new partnership with the Ladies in the Outdoors group. I can't tell you how intrigued I am with thise group of ladies...come and learn more. A special thanks Jim, Hugh, Jeff, and Mr Robinson for helping to set up, and the hot dog lunch as an appreciation for the vendors and shop owners. We have lots of fun and interesting activities planned next week for the kids and "big kids" too, as we celebrate Earthday in our own little way. Learn how to make a homemade pot and sunflower planting, 'Pizza to grow" kits, "Clean Up America" Awareness, and plastic bottle cap recycling collection for the "Art after School" Mural project any shape, size, color). Future events will incude a Safety Awarness day, Master Gardeners Clinic, Ask A Chef cooking demonstration, Health Fair and Outdoor Adventures, and more. Create a sustainable lifestyle or just come to shop and enjoy a Saturday morning with your family, friends and neighbors (and furry friends too) in beautiful, historic, downtown York. The 2010 season of the York Downtown Farmers & Artisans Market begins Saturday, April 17.

The market provides the community with fresh, seasonal, local and mountain grown fruits and vegetables, herbs, flowers, honey, and eggs.
As well as handmade crafts, candles, soap, leather goods, pottery, ... and SO MUCH MORE!

Every Saturday morning, the market will be transformed into a creative, educational, homey and lively community gathering place. The market is FREE to vendors and to the public. The market will feature live, local entertainment, an Earth Day celebration, "Ask a Master Gardner", "Wellness Day", Farm day (tractor show), Saturday Sock Hop (car show), "Ask a Chef" cooking demonstrations, bake sales, face painting, horse drawn carriage rides, and seasonal events.

Non-profits, scouts, and church groups are invited to participate with hot dog sales, bake sales, lemonade stand, etc. Local clubs, churches and businesses
are invited to have information booths as well.

The market is located at 53 N Congress St, open Saturdays from 8:00AM-NOON.
